Acupuncture Associates Reviews — How is acupuncture different from dry needling?

Both may use fine needles, but goals, training and insurance rules can differ; ask about the actual provider and method.

Clarify the proposed procedure

The terms can appear together in coverage policies, but they do not automatically mean the same treatment. Acupuncture may use traditional point selection and a broader clinical framework; dry needling is often described in relation to musculoskeletal trigger points. The technique, body area and intended outcome matter more than the label alone. Ask what the practitioner will do during your appointment.

Check the provider

Training and state scope rules vary. Request the clinician's professional license, needling training and experience with your condition. Ask about sterile single-use needles, what sensations to expect and what precautions apply to your medications or medical history. A provider qualified for one approach should not be assumed qualified for every needling procedure.

Compare payment and outcome

Insurance may classify and cover the procedures differently. Medicare's Part B page includes dry needling in its limited acupuncture benefit for qualifying chronic low-back pain, subject to its provider criteria; it is not universal coverage. Ask what specific outcome the procedure aims to change, what evidence supports that goal and what you would pay.

Questions and answers

Does Medicare mention dry needling?

Yes, within its limited chronic-low-back-pain acupuncture coverage; eligibility and provider requirements still apply.
