Acupuncture Associates Reviews — What should you know about acupuncture needle safety?

Ask about sterile, single-use needles, practitioner training and a plan for problems during or after treatment.

Know the baseline standard

The FDA regulates acupuncture needles as medical devices, and NCCIH describes the requirement that they be sterile and labeled for single use. A practitioner should explain how needles are handled and disposed of. Verify the clinician's state license and ask about training for the body areas involved in your proposed treatment. A clean room alone is not a substitute for proper needle technique.

Understand possible harms

Most reported complications are uncommon, but improperly delivered treatment has caused infection, punctured organs and other serious injuries. Discuss bleeding tendency, medication use, pregnancy and relevant medical conditions before treatment. Ask what sensation is expected, when to tell the practitioner to stop and how to reach the office afterward if a symptom concerns you.

Treat a warning sign seriously

A practitioner should respond to significant pain or an unexpected symptom rather than promise that every reaction is part of healing. Seek appropriate medical assessment for severe or persistent symptoms.

Questions and answers

Are acupuncture needles reused?

FDA-regulated acupuncture needles are labeled sterile and for single use. Ask the practitioner to confirm their own handling process.
