Acupuncture Associates Reviews — How do acupuncture and physical therapy differ for pain?

They may address different goals and can coexist, so compare your diagnosis, functional plan, evidence and costs.

Start with the clinical goal

Physical therapy commonly focuses on movement, strength and function after an assessment; acupuncture is a needling approach sometimes considered for symptom relief. The best choice depends on the diagnosis, not which office has the most enthusiastic review. Ask your medical clinician which treatments address the cause or functional limitation and whether adding acupuncture would change the plan.

Compare the evidence you need

NCCIH finds possible acupuncture benefit for certain pain conditions, including low-back and knee osteoarthritis pain, but evidence varies by condition. Do not assume a finding for chronic back pain applies to a fresh shoulder injury. Ask each provider what outcome they expect, how progress will be measured and when the plan will be reconsidered.

Compare the total workload

Consider home exercises, visit frequency, travel, insurance eligibility and out-of-pocket costs. If both services are used, record when each starts so you can discuss effects honestly. Neither a complementary visit nor a physical therapy appointment should delay assessment of new, severe or changing symptoms.

Questions and answers

Can I use both at once?

Sometimes. Coordinate both with the clinician managing your condition and make sure each has a clear goal. Ask which approach addresses mobility and which is intended for symptom relief, then measure each against that stated purpose.
